Chronological Order of Events

February 7, 1985, S/A Enrique Camarena and Mexican Pilot Alfredo Zavala-Avelar were kidnapped separately in Guadalajara, Mexico.

February 9, The Mexican Federal Judicial Police (MFJP) assumed investigative jurisdiction over the case at the insistence of the U.S. A key suspect, Rafael Caro-Quintero, flew out of Guadalajara with the knowledge of both the MFJP and the Directorate of Federal Security (DFS).

Mid-February, Traffic jams accompanied several days of vehicle searching at the U.S./Mexican border as part of the Camarena investigation.

March 2, The MFJP made a controversial raid on a small ranch near Angostura, Mexico 70 miles from Guadalajara, killing five alleged suspects (a MFJP officer was also killed).

March 6, Two bodies were found by the roadside, 900 meters from the ranch where the MFJP raid occurred.

March 7-8, The bodies were positively identified by the Deputy Chief of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and two FBI forensic experts.

March 8, S/A Camarena’s body was flown to San Diego aboard a U.S. Air Force transport plane.

March 9, Camarena’s body was flown to Calexico, CA aboard a Customs Service helicopter for cremation, private service and burial.

March 11, Secretary of State Schultz and Mexican Foreign Secretary Bernardo Sepulvega met in Washington to discuss the war on drugs, including the Camarena case.

March 17, The Mexican media reported that 11 persons were arrested and interrogated, and two Jalisco state police officers were charged with the kidnapping. Arrest orders were reported issued for seven traffickers, including Caro-Quintero, on kidnap/murder charges.

March, Attorney General Meese and Mexican Attorney General Sergio Garcia-Ramirez met in Washington to further discuss the drug situation, including the Camarena case.

April 4, Caro-Quintero was arrested in San Jose by Costa Rican authorities acting on DEA information; Caro-Quintero was flown to Mexico the following day.
